Family fun, fitness and community service will blend together in Vicksburg this Saturday for the United Way Campaign Kickoff True Color Run.
The bright bursts of color should disappear by Monday morning, but the positive impact will last much longer.
The True Color Run is all about generating excitement and awareness of the United Way’s mission to advance the common good. And in just its second year, this Color Run is off to a great start.
Historic Vicksburg will be a awash with pinks, blues, purples and more.
Shannon Royal is the Community Impact and Events Coordinator for United Way of West Central Mississippi.
“Just color being thrown everywhere, and no rules about it. Color being thrown everywhere, I mean you can’t have more fun than that,” said Royal.
Five color stations, 250 volunteers, 1,000 expected participants all add up to nice payday for the 21 partner agencies of the United Way of West Central Mississippi.
Michele Connelly, Executive Director said “we were able to write a $900 check for each 1 of our partnering agencies last year in order to keep advancing their common good in our community.”
Agencies include the Boys and Girls Club, the Salvation Army and some you might not be familiar with.
Linda Fondren is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for United Way of West Central Mississippi.
“What a great way to get that message out there for like Grace Christian Counseling, who has counseling for people who may have behavioral health issues,” she said. “What a great way to get that message out there for Good Shepard, who helps people get their GED, who supports them when their children need a place to go, so that they can go to their jobs.”
For folks over 12 it costs $30 to pre-register, if your younger than that, it’s just $15.
You can run or walk the 2.6 mile course, and there’s a 1 mile fun run too.
Of course, you get a Live United t-shirt.
Jennifer Gray is the 2016 Campaign Chair for United Way of West Central Mississippi.
“So everyone gets that white shirt, and then you wear something colorful, socks, shoes, cap, whatever you want to do and by the end of the day you’ve got a great tie-dyed looking shirt.”
The colors should vanish from the Vicksburg cityscape by Monday morning, but the memories and positive community impact will last a lifetime.
