Gearing up for the 2017 Jackson Mayoral Race

JACKSON, MS (WJTV) —  The race for mayor of Jackson is well on its way, and several candidates will be on the ballot.

People will have the choice of choosing from Tony Yarber, Chokwe A. Lumumba, Jason Wells, and Robert Graham.

Tony Yarber currently serves as mayor of Jackson. He is a Democrat and a pastor of a local church.

Chokwe A. Lumumba is a Democrat and an attorney.

Jason Wells is a Republican and works for the city.

Robert Graham is a Hinds County supervisor and is a retired police officer.

We asked three candidates what they will bring to the table.

“No excuses, no delays, no empty promises. I know the city of Jackson,” said Graham.

“Jobs were here, and the crime rate was down,” said Wells. “That is something I am going to bring back to the city of Jackson.”

“It’s about engaging you in the process and giving you a voice,” said Lumumba. “Being a part of the process of governing that people have never been a part of.”

We reached out to city spokeswoman Sheila Byrd,  to see if the mayor would comment on our story. We have not heard back.
