JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — The Department of Parks and Recreation for the City of Jackson is planning on closing the Grove Park Golf Course.
They plan on shutting it down after the department’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year was cut.
The mayor’s office said the City Council voted to cut $150,000 from the Parks and Recreation budget. We’re told they already had made a $1.3 million in reductions for the upcoming fiscal year.
Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber wanted to pass the budget without having to close the golf course.
“My Administration presented a balanced budget that did not include closing a golf course or cutting additional staff at the course. Those suggestions came from the City Council,” said Mayor Yarber. “I’m hopeful the Council will reconsider.”
However, several city leaders said they had no other choice than to support a move like that.
City officials said Parks and Recreation Department has already started the planning process of closing Grove Park.
