JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and Senator John Horhn worked together to host an unclaimed property event.
The event is from 2 p.m.until 6 p.m. at the Jackson Medical Mall. Its purpose is to help residents search and claim money that they may be owed.
The treasurer’s offices hold money owed to residents until the owners can be located. The money usually comes from companies that go out of business, owe refunds but can’t find recipients, and from earnings that come from certain investments.
“Since I was first elected, the State Treasurer’s office has returned more than $57 million in unclaimed property to Mississippians,” State Treasurer Lynn Fitch stated. “We’re grateful to partners like Senator Horhn for helping us get the word out and locate the rightful owners of the millions left to be claimed.”
To apply for unclaimed money, residents must have in their possession two forms of identification and proof of residency. Appropriate forms and assistance will be provided. A notary will also be present free of charge to push the process forward.
