(WJTV) — A massive sewage spill in the Bogue Chitto River is affecting thousands in Mississippi and Louisiana.
About 6 million gallons of raw sewage was dumped into the river after a levee breach at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brookhaven.
Residents are being told not to swim or eat fish from the water. John Jackson who owns Ryles Canoe and Tube Rental said this has had a devastating effect on his business.
“Now we have to worry about how we’re going to get through the rest of the year,” he said. “Because you know the end of the year that’s how we make our money to take care of the rental to pay the bills throughout the offseason. We don’t have that ability now.”
This was the first weekend Ryles Canoe and Tube Rental was suppose to be open since flooding.
He said this also could be harmful to the wildlife. He hopes in the future wastewater plants will include better fail safe systems.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says the city has made repairs since Friday’s breach, ending the flow of sewage.
