JACKSON, Miss.(WJTV) — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted a water advisory for the Bogue Chitto River.
The water contact advisory was issued on September 16 after sewage spilled into the river after a levee breach at the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brookhaven. The breach resulted in the discharge of about 1.3 million gallons of stormwater-diluted sewage to the river.
The advisory extended from Highway 84 in Brookhaven to the Mississippi-Louisiana state line south of Dillon’s Bridge near the community of Lehr.
Residents were told not to swim for fish in the water. MDEQ said people can now engage in these activities. They said water samples taken during the last week returned results below levels of concern.
