Gulfport man evades capture for 5 months then walks into Louisiana police station

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) – Authorities say a 20 year-old Mississippi man wanted on a murder charge who evaded Gulfport police for five months has surrendered to authorities in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Police say Jaquarius Shields, of Gulfport, faces charges in the April 9 shooting death of 27-year-old Dennis Bunch.

Bossier City police spokesman Mark Natale said in a news release Shields walked into the police station Thursday afternoon and turned himself in.

Bunch was found shot the in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Gulfport police Sgt. Damon McDaniel says detectives learned Shields and Bunch had been arguing before the shooting.

Natale says Shields would not tell the officers how he got to Bossier City nor how long had been there.
