JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Mississippi Freedom Trail marker was unveiled Wednesday at Jackson State University.
The marker was placed on J.R. Lynch Street where an umbrella group for civil rights organizations met from 1963 to 1965.
The Council of Federated Organizations’ office served as the main office for the Mississippi Movement during those years. The university renovated and re-opened its building in 2011 as a civil rights education center called the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute.
Gov. Phil Bryant and Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber attended the ceremony along with others.
