JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Funeral arrangements have been scheduled for Hinds County’s first female prosecutor, Sherri Marie Flowers-Billups, who died Tuesday of cancer. She was 48.

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors appointed Flowers-Billups as the county’s top prosecutor in 2009 to serve out the term of Malcolm Harrison who took over former Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter’s seat. She was re-elected for a four-year term in November 2011. She had previously served as an assistant district attorney for the county and as municipal attorney for the town of Bolton.

The Clarion-Ledger reports Flowers-Billups had been fighting cancer since 2005. Visitation will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Westhaven Funeral Home in Jackson, with services on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton.

Survivors include her 4-year-old son, Kingston.
