GREENVILLE, Miss. (WJTV) — A student at Greenville Weston High School is pulled by her hair, and the person who did it is a teacher.

The entire incident is captured on camera.

The Greenville School District and the police department have launched an extensive investigation.

The video was recorded by a student and was posted social media by one of her relatives.

It was posted this week and already has more than 3.4 million views. The teacher holds the student down before dragging her by the hair across the gym floor.

The district held a news conference Friday morning to address the issue.

“Safety is a number one priority here in Greenville Public Schools, and we want to make sure that our children, our faculty, staff, and parents know that we have a welcoming environment and that we want to make sure we get back and focus on the main thing, which is our children,” said Everett Chinn, Greenville Public Schools Public Relations specialist.

The district would not comment on the employment status of the teacher. They would only say that they are investigating.

Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons issued a statement about the incident:

“October 6, 2016, the Mayor’s Office became aware of an incident that occurred between a teacher and a student at Greenville Public School District. The issue was one that raised concerns about staff professionalism and the safety and treatment of our students. As a parent of a student who attends Greenville High, I am deeply concerned like many of you. Rest assured that all impacted individuals are aware of this situation and the School District has already begun to take appropriate actions to continue its efforts to guarantee the safety, protection, and integrity of our educational environment. No students have been expelled and personnel matters will be handled in accordance to the law to guarantee procedural due process.”
