BATON ROUGE, La. (WJTV) – When it went into halftime tied at 10 with traditional SEC power LSU, Southern Miss had to be feeling like it had a chance to pull off an upset.
The Tigers shut down any hopes of that quickly in the second half on their way to 35 straight points and a 45-10 victory.
Derrius Guice led the way for the Tigers on the ground, racking up 162 yards on just 16 carries with two touchdowns. Danny Etling only completed 11 passes, but three of them were for scores.
Nick Mullens only threw for 161 yards and could not find the end zone. It was a tough night all around for a usually potent Southern Miss offense, as the Golden Eagles mustered just 242 total yards.
In comparison, the Golden Eagle defense couldn’t slow down LSU. The Tigers gained 459 total yards and converted on third down in five of nine tries. They scored five touchdowns of 20 yards or more.
USM falls to 4-3 and will go into a bye week. The Golden Eagles will face Marshall next on Oct. 29.
