Major chemical leak reported inside Atchison, Kansas factory

UPDATE: 10/21/2016 11:11am Officials with the City of Atchison say that it is now safe for residents to go outside.



UPDATE: 10/21/2016 11:01am During a press conference held this morning, and broadcast via Facebook Live, Trey Cocking, the City Manager for City of Atchison official says 18 people were injured in the chemical spill, none seriously.  Those affected were treated for respiratory issues and are being kept for observation at a hospital.  He says that the situation was handled quickly by MGP, a company which he described as being a “great partner” for the city.

ATCHISON, Kan. (AP) – Authorities say a chemical plant spill has caused a noxious cloud to form over a northeastern Kansas community, prompting the evacuation of a school and the factory.

The spill occurred Friday morning at the MGP Ingredients plant in Atchison, 50 miles northwest of Kansas City.

Atchison County Emergency Manager Wes Lanter says “smoke” coming from the plant poses a breathing threat.

The St. Joseph News Press reports ( ) that one school was evacuated and several canceled classes or kept students and staff inside. The Kansas Dept. of Transportation has closed U.S. Highways 59 and 73 and Kansas Highway 7 until further notification.

City Clerk Debbie Clem says she doesn’t know which chemical spilled.

MGP produces premium distilled spirits, wheat proteins and starches. The company’s website says the plant employs about 300 people.

UPDATE: 10/21/2016 10:27am The spill is prompting highway closures throughout Atchison County, Kansas.



UPDATE: 10/21/2016 10:26am The National Weather Service in Kansas City is reporting that the spill, deemed dangerous, will spread throughout the area until 11:30 local time.

ATCHISON, Kansas (WJTV) – Several news agencies are reporting a chemical leak coming from inside a factory in Atchison, Kansas.

Fog is filling the sky there and residents are being told to remain indoors after an incident was reported at the MGP Ingredients plant.

MGP is a 75-year-old company that supplies specialty wheat products.

Police from several counties have responded to the location.

The Kansas Department of Transportation – Topeka and Lawrence Metro Area has tweeted that a “chemical cloud is moving north” and drivers are being advised to “avoid travel 8-10 miles around (and through) Atchison.”
