CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) — The City of Canton is getting ready to spray one Canton neighborhood for fleas.

Terrance Sanders, the public works director for the city said they plan to spray Presidential Hills in Canton Tuesday to try to get rid of the insects.

Sanders said the problem is in an isolated area of the city. He said the problem started about two weeks ago and it’s gotten progressively worse. He said they are trying to put a stop to it now before it gets out of hand.

He said they believe the problem is coming from a high number of stray animals in the area.

Below is a list of streets that Sanders said the problem exists:

  • Garfield Street
  • McKinley Street
  • Washington Avenue
  • Lincoln Street
  • Wilson Street
  • Hoover Street
  • Roosevelt Street
  • Harding Street
  • Madison Street

City crews plan to spray these areas Tuesday morning. They will continue to assess the problem after they spray the community.

Below is a list of precautions that homeowners in the area should take:

  • Thoroughly wash clothes and bed linens after spraying is complete
  • Wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing if outside
