Jackson residents stunned by overnight house fire that leaves family homeless

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A family of six escapes   their Jackson home after it catches fire overnight.

Sheila White, who lives across the street, says she woke up after hearing the kids, who live in the house, banging on her door.

“I just woke up in a daze, confused, like why somebody would be knocking at this time. It was actually the little girl that said our house is burning, we need to use your phone to call 911,” said White.

“They came to our house and told us to get out, they were just crying. The parents were crying,” said Charlotte Sanders, a neighbor.

White says when she and her kids stepped outside– all she could see was flames.

“I saw the back part already engulfed,” said White.

“It’s really sad. We did, we gave them like shoes and jackets and stuff,” said Sanders.

Ja’kiya Scott says she’s been best friends with the daughter of the family for years.

She woke up to text messages, from her friend, telling her to wake up, their home was on fire.

“I was sleep. As soon as I woke up, I saw her messages. I was like ‘Oh my gosh.’ So I tried to call her and the phone kept on going to voicemail,” said Scott.

Ja’kiya says she went to wake up her mom and they rushed down to the home but the family was already gone.

WJTV was told everyone made it out safe but the family lost everything.

“I was happy that they got out safe. But at the same time, it’s kind of sad because it’s not a good feeling to see that happen to somebody that you’re close to,” said Scott.

The Jackson Fire Department is looking into the cause of the fire.

The Salvation Army and the Red Cross are working to help the family as well.
