Deputies taking safety precautions for Halloween by knocking on doors of sex offenders

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — Deputies in Rankin County are getting started early on safety preparations of Halloween.

The deputies spent Thursday and Friday canvassing the county, looking for registered sex offenders.

Several states have laws in place that limit the activities of sex offenders on Halloween.

It’s a safety precaution in place to protect children from potential threats.

WJTV talked with some of them about their patrols.

“When they register at an address we have to determine whether or not they meet the requirements,” said Fred Lovett of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department. “It has to be over 3,000 feet from any school, playground, daycare and any place that where kids under the age of 18 gather.”
