WESSON, Miss. (WJTV) — Tragedy strikes a family after a Wesson High student died from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Sonya Jackson died Thursday while being treated at the hospital. The crash happened Tuesday morning. Sonya, along with two other Wesson High students, lost control of their vehicle in Copiah County.
This family is also dealing with another tragic loss. Sonya’s uncle died Thursday morning, November 3, 2016, around 5:50 a.m. in a separate accident in Wesson.
Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) Corporal Eric D. Henry said Howard McClendon’s car ran off the road near mile marker 50 and he died at the scene.
“It’s never easy,” Cpl. Henry said. “One of the hardest parts of this job is telling a family member that their loved one who just left home, won’t be coming back.”
WJTV also talked with the victims’ relatives off camera. They also told us that Sonya and Howard are related to Dee Hemphill, one of the men who died after being trapped in a gravel pit in Copiah County earlier this year.
