JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — More than a week after her home burned down, a Jackson woman is still trying to get back on her feet.
Marquita Matthews has lived in a hotel room with her four children since October 25. A fire destroyed their rental home overnight on Dogwood Trail. She is now moving to a cheaper hotel in Byram.
Her children range from ages 10 to 14.
Matthews says she’s looking for an apartment, but money is tight. The Jackson Fire Department determined that the fire was accidental and may have started because of unattended cooking.
The Salvation Army will accept donations for the family. If you drop something off, be sure to label it as “family house fire.”
