Jackson residents shocked to hear about man trying to lure children

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Police say they were forced to open fire on a naked man who was trying to lure children into his car.

It happened Sunday on Valley Street after police say he tried to run down officers.

People in that neighborhood say they had never seen Charles Lung in their neighborhood before.

WJTV did a little digging and found that the man, at the center of it all, has a criminal past.

“It was very surprising. Very surprising. I couldn’t really believe it at first,” said Antonio Leddell, a Jackson resident.

Some Jackson residents are still in shock after police say they had to take drastic measures Sunday afternoon when they shot Lung.

“Dude was really kind of sick man. Trying to lure young kids into his car like that. It’s just kind of sick. I really hope he gets some time for it,” said Leddell.

Author ties say the 55-year-old was driving at a high speed towards them before the shots were fired.

Investigators say Lung was naked as he tried to lure children, in the neighborhood, to his car.

“It’s obscene. He was breaking laws. I mean you’ve got to be clothed to be walking around. Basically I am glad they got him because he could have been doing that to one of my children,” said Shanita Dixon Williams, a Jackson resident.

Records show at least two prior arrests in Florida for battery and domestic violence related issues.

“You’ve got all types of people out there. You just have to hope that they are caught, and brought to justice. I’m glad he’s off the street, I’m glad the officer didn’t get hurt. I am all for blue, protect and serve, and justification of the law,” said Williams.

Jackson residents say they are just glad to know he’s off the streets and that no children were hurt.

“I am thankful for that. Very thankful for that. I have a child on the way. I’m not sure if it’s a boy or girl, but they don’t care who they abduct these days,” said Leddell.

The people living in the neighborhood, where it happened, did not want to go on camera.

WJTV did reach out to some of Lung’s relatives to see if they could offer more insight on what happened.

We have not heard back from any of them at this time.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting.
