JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Democrat Bennie Thompson is returning to the U.S. House from Mississippi.
Thompson on Tuesday defeated Republican John Bouie II of Gulfport, the Reform Party’s Johnny McLeod of Hattiesburg and independent Troy Ray of West.
Thompson, of Bolton, is the only Democrat and only African-American among Mississippi’s four U.S. House members. He is also the state’s longest-serving current congressman, holding his seat since he won a 1993 special election. He is the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee.
The 2nd District includes all or part of 26 counties, stretching 200 miles along the Mississippi River, encompassing the rural Delta and dipping into the metro Jackson area.
