JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — It is a constant battle for police to reduce the crime rate in the city. Leaders say it’s not an easy fix.
Last year, there were 58 homicides in Jackson.
Wednesday night’s shooting on University Boulevard brings the homicide total for 2016 to 57 so far, according to JPD.
Police Chief Lee Vance said the department had seen improvements in certain areas, but he thinks the problem is that a lot of people don’t respect human life.
The city has partnered with the Department of Justice to find solutions to the crimes, but Vance says it will take more than that.
Chief Vance said the department met with the Department of Justice last week and they will meet again next week.
