Councilman proposes tax on hourly motels to improve parks in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes wants to charge some motels a fee in order to improve parks in Jackson.

Mary Jones Community Center is one of those parks he says need improvement.

Stokes says basketball goals are missing or damaged at the park.

In order to give children a safe place to play, Stokes wants to charge some motels a five dollars tax.

He’s talking specifically about motels that have hourly rates.

“We think this is not a sin tax. We don’t want anyone to confuse this with a sin tax. This is a tax to help the children. Again. We’re asking for $5 per rental of hotels,” Stokes said during a Sunday afternoon press conference.

Councilman stokes says he’ll propose the ordinance at the next city council meeting.

If it’s approved, $2 would go to the Jackson Police Department budget.

Two dollars would go to the parks and rec fund, and $1 would go to the general fund.
