Wildfire breaks out in Rankin County

FLORENCE, Miss. (WJTV) – A county-wide page sends multiple crews to Alexander Myers Road in Star, Saturday evening. According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Investigator Brett McAlpin, three children ages 7-11 were playing with a lighter in a pasture when brush caught fire.

Because of dry conditions, the fire spread quickly.

Around 4:00 crews got the call about a 7-acre fire according to Randy Giachelli with the Mississippi Forestry Commission.

Giachelli says 37 first responders were on scene including all Rankin County volunteer fire departments. The MFC plane was brought in to help as well.

There are about 12 homes that were surrounding the fire, none of those were damaged.

There are no injuries.

No charges will be filed.

While in the process of unloading the bulldozer used to help in containing the fire, a small residential water line was hit. It’s now been repaired according to McAlpin.
