Marshall County prison on lockdown; Inmate dies after fight breaks out

MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — A Mississippi Department of Corrections inmate died after a fight at a prison in Marshall County.

According to MDOC officials, Oscar Pirtle died from his injuries Tuesday.

Around 3:30 a.m., officers at the Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs went to a housing unit after a fight broke out. When they got there, they found two inmates with injuries.

The second inmate was taken to a hospital. That inmate has since been released from the hospital. No staffers were injured.

Pirtle was serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated assault.

The facility is on lockdown.

The motive is still under investigation. No charges have been filed at this point.
