What’s Working: The Mustard Seed in Brandon

BRANDON, Miss. (WJTV) — Looking for a few last-minute Christmas gifts that are sure to bring smiles?

The Mustard Seed gift shop in Brandon has plenty of heartfelt holiday ideas.

Time is running out to shop for Christmas presents at the Mustard Seed gift shop. It will be open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Then it’s closed until the New Year.

The Mustard Seed has been meeting the needs of adults with developmental disabilities for 35 years.

It gets no government funding. Seedsters, as they are known, paint ceramics, which are sold to provide 20 percent of the Mustard Seeds operating budget.

Mandy Sisson is the Community Relations Director.

“So many people come in, and they are really touched by these items that our guys make,” she said. ” Our guys take great pride in the ceramics that they paint. They do beautiful work. They’re practical. You can use them every day, and they are really meaningful to the person you are giving the gift to.”

22-year-old Royce Smith is in his first year as a Seedster.

Seedsters sign the bottom of their ceramics. Sometimes, the people who get them, write letters.

“We read those to our Seedsters in front of everyone, and it’s so rewarding,” Sisson said. “They are so excited. Everyone is cheering for them. It’s a lot of fun.”

Michelle Trebitoch said she puts Angels on everything she paints.

“I love angels,” she said.

Now, ceramics aren’t the only thing to feature Seedster artwork.

“One thing that we have introduced this year is a textiles line,” Sisson said. “So we have pillows that are designed by Seedsters as well as tea towels, gift cards, Christmas cards.”

There are also ornaments and food mixes that are sure to be a hit at your holiday get together.

Last but not least, there are two signature scent candles to choose from. The Seedsters picked out the scents. Follow your nose to The Mustard Seed.

Saturday, December 17 is the last day the Gift Shop will be open before Christmas.
