JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — A Hinds County jury found a man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend not guilty Thursday, on his birthday.
Ben Hawkins turned 54 today. He was arrested in 2013 after his pregnant girlfriend, Darlene Day, was found dead in their bathroom. He was charged with two counts of capital murder.
Hawkins took the stand in the murder trial, stating that he did not kill Day. He claims she suffered from a medical condition that caused seizures. He testified that he found Day unconscious on the bathroom floor, January 11, 2013.
On Wednesday a witness for the defense, who was a former Mississippi medical examiner, claimed Day died after having a seizure and falling to the floor.
Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart ruled that Day died from strangulation.
A jury found Hawkins not guilty on both counts of murder Thursday.
