EDWARDS, Miss. (WJTV) — An officer shot and killed a suspect who was allegedly involved in a cime spree, authorities said.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department said Highway 22 is still shut down; law enforcement officers are investigating the scene.
The incident started around 7:16 a.m. Deputies said they receive a call about a 50-year-old woman who was assault while she was jogging down Pine Grove Road near Highway 49.
Hinds County authorities reached out to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department to give them a vehicle description. Madison County authorities said they were looking the same vehicle. They said the driver hit a pedestrian and had another crash that involved a truck.
Authorities used a helicopter to start searching for the vehicle. They said they spotted it headed down Farr Road in Hinds County. Law enforcement officers tried to stop the vehicle. Deputies said the driver refused to stop and tried to ram their cars.
Deputies said the driver turned into a driveway near the intersection of Hwy 22 and Tucker Lane outside of Edwards.
Authorities said the suspect continued through a yard and was fatally shot by an Edwards police officer while allegedly attempting to run over the officer.
The officer’s leg was injured. He was taken to the hospital.
Hinds County deputies said the suspect was driving a car that was reported stolen in Jackson.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
