JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Gateway Rescue Mission received a big sock donation just in time for the cold weather.
A local boy scout collected over 2,000 socks for the homeless.
William Meck started the project to gain his Eagle Scout status.
His original goal was to collect 1,000 socks. But after a month or so, he doubled the goal.
Meck set up boxes at his church, his school and the Mississippi Children’s Museum.
He says he chose socks because “your feet are your body’s foundation.”
“Socks are the most important item needed by the homeless because they have to walk everywhere they go,” Meck said.
Gateway Rescue Mission Director of Volunteer Services Rusty Ryan says socks are one of the most looked over necessities for the homeless.
“For us to have to be able to have something like this on hand is a good thing, because when the need is there we can meet it,” Ryan said.
